Description
Crossed Roller Bearings are highly specialized rolling bearings that offer exceptional precision and rigidity. Their defining feature is the cross-pattern arrangement of the internal cylindrical rollers. This unique design provides the bearing with an outstanding multi-directional load-carrying capacity.
Below is a detailed overview of their features, structures, and applications:
1. Core Features Crossed Roller Arrangement (90-degree Alternation): The cylindrical rollers are arranged orthogonally—alternating perpendicularly to one another—within a 90-degree V-shaped raceway groove. This configuration allows a single bearing to simultaneously withstand loads from all directions, including radial loads, bidirectional axial loads, and moment (overturning) loads.
Extreme Rigidity & Precision: Unlike standard ball bearings that utilize "point contact," rollers provide "line contact" with the raceways. Consequently, elastic deformation under load is minimized, delivering exceptionally high rotational accuracy and structural rigidity.
Space Savings & Simplified Structure: In traditional setups, managing complex combined loads typically requires a combination of two radial ball bearings and a thrust ball bearing. Crossed roller bearings consolidate this into a single unit, significantly reducing installation space and enabling more compact, lightweight mechanical designs.
Adjustable Preload: By adjusting the bearing's internal clearance or applying a specific preload, clearance can be completely eliminated, achieving a high-rigidity operating state with zero backlash.
2. Main Structural Types Inner Ring Rotation / Outer Ring Rotation: Depending on the mechanical requirements, options include an integrated inner ring (with a split outer ring) or an integrated outer ring (with a split inner ring) to ensure peak precision for different rotating components.
High-Rigidity Integrated Type: Both the inner and outer rings feature a one-piece integrated structure. This design can be bolted directly to the housing without requiring a securing flange, substantially reducing installation errors.
3. Main Applications Crossed roller bearings serve as indispensable components in modern automation equipment where high precision, high load capacity, and resistance to overturning moments are paramount:
Industrial Robotics: Robotic arm joints, rotating waists, and applications paired with hollow rotary actuators or speed reducers (such as RV reducers).
Precision Machine Tools: Precision cutting rotary tables (turrets) for CNC lathes and machining centers.
Medical Equipment: High-precision medical examination beds and the rotating assemblies of CT scanners.
Semiconductors & Automation: Wafer-handling robotic arms and precision indexing tables for IC manufacturing equipment.
Radar & Aerospace: Radar antenna mounts and the rotating bases of high-end optical tracking systems.
