What Is a Back Pressure Regulator?

In circulation, coating, and industrial fluid systems, some processes require not only downstream pressure control but also stable upstream pressure and fluid circulation.

A Back Pressure Regulator is typically installed in a circulation or return line to maintain the required upstream pressure.

When upstream pressure exceeds the set pressure, the regulator allows fluid to pass through the return line, helping maintain the required system back pressure.

Pressure Regulator vs. Back Pressure Regulator

Both devices are used for fluid pressure control, but they perform different functions.

Fluid Pressure Regulator
Controls downstream pressure by reducing a higher inlet pressure to the pressure required by the process.

Back Pressure Regulator
Controls upstream pressure by restricting flow and maintaining the required pressure before the regulator.

In simple terms:

Pressure Regulator → Controls downstream pressure
Back Pressure Regulator → Maintains upstream pressure
